5. Tempted is the fifth studio album by American country music artist, Marty Stuart.
Songs from the album “Tempted,” “Little Things”, “‘Til I Found You”, and “Burn Me Down,” were released as singles. and reached the top 20 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts.
“Tempted” charted at #5 in it’s peak position. The song still holds the best ranking of all of Marty Stuart’s solo single releases in his career. The song was written by Stuart and Paul Kennerly. It was recorded in 1990 and released in August 1991 as the third single and title track from the album Tempted.
Yesterday, I was able to purchase tickets to see Marty perform live at an event benefiting PBS stations. The event will be held in my hometown in May. I am excited to see one of the musicians that I admire the most up close and personal. Marty Stuart’s songs are ingrained in my mind. When I think of him, his music takes me back to some earlier days of my life. His music can be found in the soundtrack of my mind in the section from High School.
Stuart was making music long before my high school days. His career goes back to 1968. Marty Stuart initially toured with blue grass musician Lester Flatt. Flatt is best known for his collaborations with banjo picker Earl Scruggs. The two were known as the Foggy Mountain Boys (Flatt and Scruggs). After Flatt retired in 1978, Stuart played with Vassar Clements and Doc Watson. Charlie Scruggs, who is the Grandson of the legendary bluegrass musician Earl Scruggs now plays bass in Marty Stuart’s own band “The Fabulous Superlatives.”
Marty Stuart became a part of Johnny Cash’s road band in 1980. Stuart’s first wife was Johnny Cash’s daughter Cindy.
I have often wished that Marty Stuart and Rodney Crowell would start a super group and call it the Ex Son in Laws. Crowell is also an “ex son in law” of Cash, once married to Johnny’s eldest daughter, the musician Roseanne Cash.
Marty Stuart’s first solo album was released in 1985 but his popularity and success didn’t shine until the 90’s. His top ten singles in the early 90’s coupled with duets with the artist Travis Tritt have made his name a mainstay in the Nashville scene.
Stuart is a member of the Grand Old Opry and is also a past president of the Country Music Foundation. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2020. Since his 2005 launch of a custom record label, Superlatone Records, his recent releases feature traditional Gospel and Roots music.
I am truly Looking forward to May 6th for the Marty Party at Basin PBS Main Street Live 2021.
