Why Me Lord

Spread the love

I can recall times in my life when I felt that all was lost. Everyone and everything was against me. The whole world had turned dark and cold. There were times that I couldn’t even feel the warmth of the sun’s rays on my face. Everybody became a stranger to me. Routine things in my everyday life had become a struggle. I had lost my will to live, but I was in too much pain to pull the trigger.

Why me Lord, what have I ever done

When Kris Kristofferson penned the song, “Why Me,” he was in a similar place and having those same feelings as I was back then. Through some of the darkest times in his life, he was able to find hope and the strength to move on.

Why me Lord, what have I ever done

To deserve even one of the pleasure I’ve known

Tell me, Lord, what did I ever do

That was worth lovin’ you for the kindness you’ve shown

By admitting my own powerlessness, and showing just the slightest bit of humility I was able to begin to dig myself out of that fiery pit that I was in. I was raised up to be a Christian. I believed in God. I just felt that my sins had been too great and that I had gone too far down for God to care about me anymore. I was wrong. For I know now that God was with me the whole time. He held my hand even when I wouldn’t let him. He was there in the madness and chaos that my life had become. He was there to pick me up and dust me off, and begin to put those broken pieces of me back together again.

Re-dedicating my life to Christ was one of the best things that I ever did for myself. My entire perception of life changed in only an instant. I was able to see the sunlight, smell the flowers, and once again be happy no matter what was happening outside of myself.

Music historian Bill Malone recalled the story of Kristofferson writing “Why Me.” Malone said that Kris was in an emotionally low place in his life and after attending a church service by the Reverend Jimmie Rogers Snow, he sat down to write the song.

“It was just a personal thing I was going through at the time. I had some kind of experience that I can’t even explain.”

‘Why Me, Lord’ – as the song is sometimes known – “may seem greatly out of character for Kristofferson, but it can be interpreted as his own personal religious rephrasing of ‘Sunday Morning Coming Down.’ In this case, he is ‘coming down’ not from drugs, but from the whole hedonistic euphoria of the (1960s).”

Malone describes the gruff vocal voice of Kris Kristofferson. He considered the voice as “perfect” for the song.

“he sounds like a man who has lived a lot but is now humbling himself before God.

Kris Kristofferson has said that he was moved by the Larry Gatlin song, “Help Me (Lord)“. In Johnny Cash’s memoir Man in Black he tells the story that Larry Gatlin singing “Help Me” at the Evangel Temple, is what prompted Kristofferson to write the song.

I am certain that whatever the reason that Kris Kristofferson wrote “Why Me,” it was a good one. The song soon became and still is one of Kristofferson’s best.

Why Me,” reached number one in Billboard Hot Country Singles charts in July 1973. For 19 weeks, the song stayed in the Top 40. The song spent 38 weeks in the Hot 100 this almost tied the record set by Johnny Mathis for his song, “Wonderful! Wonderful!,” which had stayed in the charts for 39 weeks. By the end of 1973, “Why Me,” ranked sixth on Billboard Year-End Hot 100 singles.

Try me, Lord, if you think there’s a way

I can try to repay, all I’ve taken from you

Maybe Lord, I can show someone else

What I’ve been through myself, on my way back to you

I am here to tell you, on this glorious Easter day that there is hope. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. You can have eternal life if only you believe, and that you ask Jesus to rest inside of your heart. I am here to say that was the best decision that I ever made.

1 Peter 1:3 “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.”

People, Places, and Circumstances may change, but Jesus is the same Yesterday, Today, and Forever.

If you have not ever received Christ as your savior, or you want or need to re-dedicate your life to him please feel free to say this simple prayer with me today.

Dear Lord,

I admit that I am a sinner. I have done many things that don’t please you. I have lived my life for myself only. I am sorry, and I repent. I ask you to forgive me.

I believe that you died on the cross for me, to save me. You did what I could not do for myself. I come to you now and ask you to take control of my life; I give it to you. From this day forward, help me to live every day for you and in a way that pleases you.

I love you, Lord, and I thank you that I will spend all eternity with you.

Amen.

Pancho.
